So What???

Home

You may say "So What?" to all of this. And "so what?" is an appropriate question, in many situations. But think about it, this question is always in regard to some fact that came before. Someone could say "so what?" after you say:
I'm going downtown
I slept in this morning
I'm king of the mountain
He fell down
She is someone famous
He likes chocolate chip cookies
These are all statements, or proclamations, or, if you will, "whats"! (facts!).   And "so whats?" seek for a response, usually in the form of a command. (commands).

The point here is that a "what" and a "so what?" (facts and commands) go together.

In proper preaching , the "what -- so what" pattern will always be present. If it is not, the message will probably consist in nice thoughts, irrelevant but interesting stories, political viewpoints, or moralistic discussions and/or admonitions. It will not be the word of God.

A good example is in Philippians 2, verses 12 and 13, (in reverse order) where Paul tells us "work out your salvation" (command), because "it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure" (fact). Also, from Exodus 20, I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, (fact). And then followed the ten commandments (commands).

What is the ultimate "what --so what?"

He suffered, died, and rose for His own
Believe on Him, (learn of Him, love Him and obey His commands)
"Trust and Obey" (It's a song)

Are you receiving the proper "feeding" when you publicly worship God. Are you hearing the ultimate facts and ultimate commands every sabbath? If not, you should seek it with everything you've got. (See also, Church, Country Club, or Fluff?)
