If you have unbelieving parents, who knows? They will tell
you whatever they believe, based on their current beliefs, and their upbringing.
They may be thieves and teach you very "good" ways to steal. They may be
very moral people and teach you good ways of living, giving you good advice
on how to get along in the world. And these things are not necessarily bad.
But if you have believing parents, (depending on their
knowledge and maturity in the Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ), they will
ache for you to know the truth. They will want you to know:
that you can know where you came from
why you are
here where you are going
They want you to know that Jesus is God, and that
He has chosen some people for Himself, to be members of His Kingdom, that He
has actually transferred them from the kingdom of darkness, and transferred
them to His own Kingdom, and they will live eternally with Him in Heaven when
He returns (Colossians 1 verse 13). And that some won't.
They would tell you that they did not do a good job of
raising you, but that they did the best they could under the circumstances,
and they would apologize for their shortcomings. They would tell you of SIN,
(not mistakes, or accidents, or bad judgment), real sin, and how it separates
us from the true God.
They would tell you that God does whatever He pleases, and
He has made a requirement for those who want to know Him. In other words,
He is sovereign, AND, we are responsible. We are responsible to believe, (have
faith) in Him (John 6: 28-29, Hebrews 11:6) That means we
will ONLY get to know
Him, by the means He has established (see "Means").
They would tell you that they have been freed from the power
of sin (though not from it's presence until Jesus comes again), and that though
they still sin, they hate their sin, and repent (change their ways) and ask God
to forgive their sin.
They want you to know that they understand about the
pressures of the world, how worldly things have attracted them and are
attracting you, and how meaningless those things are. (They've been there!)
They would tell you that Jesus paid the price for their sin
by dying on the cross, and that out of gratitude (they know there is
nothing they can do to merit salvation and eternal life) they want more and more to obey
Him. And they want this for you too!
They would want most for you to go to a church that preaches
the gospel, the FACTS and COMMANDS (or indicative and imperatives, but they
probably don't know these terms).***
(If you need to find a church in your area that most closely teaches the
Word and "proclaims the excellencies" of the
Lord, email us and we would be
glad to help.
***Most churches today just tell nice stories, or give mostly
commands how to "Live a good life", "get along well with others", "how to
get out of debt". What believers need to hear over and over is the gospel (good
news) that Jesus has JUSTIFIED us, (made us right with Him), taken
away our guilt (expiation), made a covering for us
(atonement), SO THAT we can joyously praise Him and worship
Him. (see, "Do I have to go to church?)
