telegram from Belgium

Willard A. Craig's picture is displayed on a 30 foot "Memory Wall" inside the Dole Institute of Politics.

There are 962 WWII pictures on display out of almost 2000 submissions.

His medals and Campaign ribbons are shown on this page.

He was deployed from Clay Center, KS and I have been told that of the 15 from this town - all came home. There were a lot of prayers being raised...

Williard was a wonderful vocalist. He helped the USO entertain the troops and met Bob Hope. Before the war, he had been offered a singing contract in New York city.

Eventually, after the war he became a radio announcer in his home town of Clay Center, KS. One might have heard abit of a tune now and then - so in a way, he never gave up his love of performing. He also was a successful Metropolitan Life Insurance agent and worked at his two brothers family store.

In his final years, he was a Quick Trip store manager and resided in Kansas City, MO

A Grandson's Memorial
The front of the Dole Institute of Politics building displays a stained glass window of "Old Glory" and is thought to be one of the largest stained glass pictures of the American Flag in the world. It is handpainted to make it look like fabric and there are 960 pieces that make up the flag. It weighes 1 ton and is American made.

On both sides of the American Flag window, encased in glass, are two of the beams from World Trade Center - a memorial to the lives which were lost.

The Dole Institute dedication was billed as the "Greatest Generations Greatest Celebration." The Dole Institute will house state-of-the-art exhibits and the world's largest Congressional archive. It has meeting spaces and will host KU's first satellite uplink. Chancellor Hemenway shared that the Dole Institute stands for "all those patriots who left the security and safety of states like Kansas to protect the nation.

The University will dedicate its efforts to teach the lessons of these lives and the values they lived by." He hopes that young people who visit will be inspired to focus on political activity that will strengthen American democracy.

This is a wonderul tribute to the THREE year's (of mostly overseas) service that our Dad, and your Grandfather, gave to our country to provide for the peace, safety and freedom of his country and others. His brother, Ed, has only praise for his bravery.

Willard suffered loss of friends in battles. He was injured while trying to protect the troops in his charge (a true leader), and still kept going. He returned home near the end of the war, not the same as when he left us. He bore painful memories and his physical and emotional health was at risk for years. However, in the end, he continued his walk with God, love for all of his family, and his beloved America. He had served with unquestioning commitment for the cause of freedom. He overcame his obstacles. His last words to his family were full of praises!

We, his children and grandchildren, can stand proud.
