A Note About Cyclocross Racing Age

Cyclocross season is upon us, and I've had a few emails and phone calls from folks who are a little confused about how the racing age works for cyclocross. Here's the rule:

1A26. A rider's racing age shall be his or her age on December 31 of the current year except in cyclocross. A rider’s racing age in cyclocross is his age on December 31st of the year that the cyclocross season ends. [...]

So, this is actually worded slightly differently than in previous rulebooks, and hopefully much more understandable. Since cyclocross season does not end until February, your racing age in this year's cyclocross races is actually going to be your racing age in 2010. For example, I am 34, and my racing age (if I raced) would be 34 in everything but cyclocross. For tomorrow's race, I'd be racing age 35. Nifty, huh?

In our database, though, we put your "real" racing age, so don't be too surprised if you see folks with racing age "39" in the Masters 40+ race -- it keeps our data a lot cleaner to keep it this way.

See you at the next race!

CYCLOCROSS UPGRADE NOTES

July 25, 2009

UPCOMING OFFICIALS CLINIC

June 10, 2009

If you've ever thought about becoming a bicycle race official now's the time. The
Kansas Cycling Association is hosting a one day traing clinic June 13th (this weekend)
& July 26th in Lenexa, KS (southwest KC).

Attending either 4.5 hour clinic and passing an open book test will allow you to
become a level "C" official. An annual officials license is just $35 and there
is no fee for the clinic.

If you ride motorcycles when you're off the bike the KCA is also hosting a moto-ref
(motorcycle riding official) clinic July 25th in Lenexa.

Contact Margretta DeVries at margrettadevries@sbcglobal.net
[mailto:margrettadevries@sbcglobal.net]
or 785-424-3752 to reserve a spot at any of these clinics.
Officials get paid a per day fee and mileage to travel to races. A good quality
official is always in demand.
Happy riding,

Roger Lomshek
Kansas Cycling Association president

A Word from Your Friendly Neighborhood Upgrade Coordinator

March 9, 2009

A Word from Your Friendly Neighborhood Upgrade Coordinator
As the new USAC Local Upgrade Coordinator, I wanted the KCA constituency to be aware of the process. First off, thanks for racing! It is only by growing the sport that we all become better racers. More racers mean bigger fields, more experience, and more upgrade points! That’s a good thing.
Many racers want to upgrade as quickly as possible, and in certain cases, that’s a good thing. While not a steadfast rule, most upgrades on the local level should be taken slowly. Enjoy the experience, learn to race in a pack, and accrue the points as you are able. It’s very simple for a Road Category 5 to Category 4 upgrade (men) or Road Category 4 to 3 (women): experience in 10 mass start races. That’s it.
But, after that it gets a little tricky. For further category upgrades, a racer must earn a certain number of finishing points within a twelve month period. Only by accruing these points are you able to upgrade. For a detailed description of the points, how many are earned and when, please see pages 19-25 of the 2009 USAC Cycling Rule Book:
http://www.usacycling.org/forms/USAC_rulebook.pdf
The other issue that many local areas, including ours, have is that there are several racers that stay at a lower category for far too long. As Upgrade Coordinator, I’m working hard to find people who have been a Category 4 for more than one year to find out the reason. I understand if you have not earned the requisite points, but for those of you who have and have not yet upgraded, please do so ASAP! This is especially true for the ladies out there in the Category 4 ranks – if you have 10 mass starts, you’re now a 3 so go ahead and request that upgrade via your “My USA Cycling” page on the usacycling.org web site! In order to grow the sport at all levels, we need to make sure that all racers are racing at the appropriate category level. Nobody loves a sandbagger, so please make your requests so I don’t have to hunt you down via USAC results!
KCA continues to grow and evolve as an institution. We welcome your input and questions. If you have any questions about the upgrade process, or just wonder how it all works, don’t hesitate to contact me at: Jeffrey@renaissancecoachingllc.com.

KCA Meeting After Tour of KC

August 8, 2008

The KCA board of directors will conduct a meeting Sunday at 3 PM after the Tour of KC concludes. In keeping with bylaw requirements to have at least two meetings open to the public each year any voting members of the KCA (club presidents, promoters or their proxies) can attend, offer their opinions and observe while the board of directors discusses and decides the usual life or death issues we are faced with.

Non-BOD members may not vote at this meeting but input from all members is always welcome. The meeting will begin with a dinner (self pay) at Tienda Casa Paloma mexican restaurant at 3 PM with the meeting to follow immediately after. I have reserved a large table under my name "Roger" for our group. Hopefully the meeting will be over by 6 PM. Tienda Casa Paloma is near the corner of 82nd & Metcalf in Shawnee, KS. | Map |

Subjects to be discussed and decided include but are not limited to... 1) Finalize 2009 state championship bid process 2) Set date and rules for a Promoters date setting meeting 3) Determine date and location of KCA annual meeting 4) Discuss and revise current rules on use of KCA equipment at races 5) Set up 2009 Omnium framework 6) USAC local association annual meeting in CO.

Hope this finds you fit, fast and lean,

Roger Lomshek Kansas Cycling Association president

The KCA with USAC's blessing is beginning a Race Mentor Program to help novice racers through the sometimes difficult learning period. Experienced (Cat 1, 2 or 3 racers) may start in a Cat 4 or 5 race to train an individual Cat 5 or 4 racer.
