Mary Jo Bane taught human resources policy at the Kennedy School, and once had us write a history of American welfare policy in three pages, double-spaced.  She later resigned from the Clinton Adminstration in protest of welfare reform efforts.  Whether or not you agree with her assessment of welfare reform, Bane's courage and conviction have to be admired.

                    County Commissioner, Douglas County, Kansas.

Jan 1995 - Jan 1998

Consultant with Midwest Professional Services.  Authored and published the Kansas Environmental Almanac on the World Wide Web. Offered commentaries for KANU, the local National Public Radio affiliate.  Spoke on environmental issues to such groups as Leadership Lawrence, the League of Women Voters, the Heartland Chapter of the Certified Hazardous Materials Managers, various classes at the University of Kansas, and the Sierra Club. Served as Vice Chair of the Lawrence Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee.

 

Director of the Division of Environment -- Kansas Department of Health and Environment -- responsible for air, waste, water, remediation and district service programs with combined staff of 400 and budget of $55 million; program and policy development and legislative activities related to environment and natural resources.

Environmental Center Manager -- Professional Services Industries -- responsible for oversight of 30 offices west of the Mississippi in performance of Phase I and II Site Assessments, Site Characteristic Studies, Environmental Compliance Inspections, Indoor Air Quality Studies, and Community and Regulatory Liaison Services.

Environmental Scientist --  U.S. Ecology and Environment -- under EPA Superfund contract responsible for emergency response to hazardous materials releases; oversight of responsible-party investigations of soil and groundwater contamination; investigating orphan drums for hazardous characteristics; risk assessment of contamination sites; and special projects. 

Management Analyst -- Kansas Department of Health and Environment --  responsible for preparation legislative agenda, State/EPA Agreement, operating budget for the Division of Environment; and management studies pertaining to the efficiency, effectiveness and optimal structure of the agency.
